ARCHIVE: You can’t mess with free will

My favorite scene in “Bruce Almighty” is when God (played by Morgan Freeman) is chatting with Bruce (played by Jim Carrey) and discussing the rules of Bruce’s impending tenure as God for a week.

God: “…and you can’t mess with free will.”

Bruce: “Well, can I ask why?”

God, laughing with delight: “Yes you can! That’s the beauty of it!”

In my long-standing experience as a healer, I have found this to be true. I can’t clear anything you are unwilling for me to clear. The upside of this is that you can’t be controlled or manipulated by me (or any other healer, unless of course you have victim issues, in which case manipulation will be ever-present in your field until you clear that), and I can’t do anything to you without your consent at some level.

The downside of this is that if anything is holding up the show, it’s you. And sometimes you can be downright stubborn, which means it takes a lot longer to get to the root of something if you’re resisting the discovery of it.

It also explains why we can’t “fix” someone else who doesn’t want fixing. I can’t facilitate your change until you are willing to change, period.

Now here’s where it gets tricky: when your brain says “I’m willing, OMG I am SO willing to let this go!” and yet some part of you (perhaps your Identity, or your Ego, or your Inner Child, or some other part of you) says “hell no, we won’t let it go.” That’s when you may get frustrated and annoyed that things aren’t moving as fast as you’d like them to.

But I am tenacious. I keep at it, until I find that underlying fear and identify it. I pull it out into the light and then I give you the choice:

“Here’s where it all started. And you’re afraid XYZ will happen if you let this go. Do you really want to let this go?”

Now, if you say yes at this point (and mean it), then we can clear it. Poof! Up in smoke in a matter of minutes.

But if you say no, that’s OK, because at least you now possess the understanding of what’s been lurking there all along. And when you’re ready to let that go, then we can also clear it virtually instantly.

The clearing part is instantaneous. But it’s the willingness to let go that sometimes causes delays. And that’s ok — it is what it is.

Personally, as a healer I find it comforting to know that we can’t mess with free will. It means I can do the work I was blessed to be able to do. I can press onward, helping as many people as possible, and always trusting that I am helping people to the fullest extent that they are willing to allow me to help and clear for them. And I can know that I’m never pushing anyone too hard, or leading them in a direction they don’t want. It’s impossible for me to do that, because I can’t mess with free will.

It’s also comforting to know that as a person, no one can mess with MY free will. Which means, any time I feel as though someone has hurt me, or taken advantage of my generosity, or talked me into something I don’t want, I can see the truth in that moment: they didn’t DO anything. I allowed the situation to happen.

This understanding makes me stronger, more confident. It allows me to create my reality the way I see fit, without outside influence or fear of others. It causes me to feel safe and protected, as the Universe is looking out for me because I have the greatest gift of all: free will.

What about you? How do YOU feel knowing you can’t mess with free will?
