Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and to the moms who act as fathers. At the risk of sounding like I wear patchouli (which I do not. I get my grounding energy from the inside, thanks), I’ll chance it and say what I’m really thinking:
But that’s not why I’m writing today – I want to give you a heads-up on today’s Summer Solstice.
First off, WTH is summer solstice? It is the longest day of the year (in June for Northern Hemisphere, in December for Southern Hemisphere) and it is when the tilt of the earth’s axis is most inclined toward the sun. Hence, the long-ass day.
If you ask any metaphysical-type what the meaning of this annual date is, you’ll hear something along the lines of “honoring the light within each of us” or “standing in the light” or “symbolic of the spiritual fire that burns brightly within.” All of which is true, by the way, but what does that really mean for you?
When I check in around this year’s summer solstice, I get the following:
“This is a time for you to turn toward the light. Illuminate the areas of your life that you’ve kept hidden or buried. Do not get caught up in the darkness of life, the unfulfilled expectations, the shattered dreams, the losses, the what-ifs. Rather, look to the sun as a reminder of life’s blessings. Be grateful for all that you possess, and all that is coming to you now. Be grateful for your relationships, your talents, your strength, your beauty. Feel the warmth of unconditional love and connect to the abundance of life that the sun provides for. Marvel at the small wonders of life: how the grass grows without a sound, receiving all that it needs, nourished by the energy of the sun. Let your light radiate out to others, out into the world, through your words, your thoughts, your feelings, your actions. Be the sunshine in your own life, as well as others. Be warm and nurturing. Be radiant.”
I also get that this Summer Solstice is an excellent time to begin a gratitude journal, a meditation practice for gratitude, a vision board, an abundance log, and anything else that keeps your focus on all that you are receiving (as opposed to what you want, which has not yet arrived and remains in the dark for the moment).
Think sun today! Orange, yellow, white, bright colors and feelings. Bright flavors (citrus fruits and bright acids in vinegars and dressings and marinades). Enjoy the sun if you can get outside today. Celebrate this change in the season.
And remember to wear sunblock, of course 😉 As contradictive as that may sound, skin cancer is no joke. Butter up, baby!
Go for it.
