Recently, I posted a survey asking hundreds of people what they most wanted help with, and “getting unstuck” (in one form or another) was one of the most common responses. Hence, this new series on How to Get Unstuck.
In this series, we’ll look at ways to get unstuck (in general), in life, in a relationship, in your career, and around money. Let’s start with three tips for getting unstuck in any area of life.
Get Unstuck Tip #1 – Bust a Block
In many cases, you’re stuck because there’s some kind of block or limiting belief that’s keeping you where you are. Clear that block and you suddenly find you have the power and the wherewithal to shift the entire situation. For example, if you find you’re stuck around your health (maybe you can’t seem to find time/motivation to exercise), you could have a block that says “I hate exercise,” or “I have no willpower,” or “I am lazy,” or “I don’t like to sweat,” or any other number of other blocks that are preventing you from getting your workout in gear. Clearing those blocks is like clearing the path ahead – suddenly, there are no more obstacles to prevent you from moving forward. For more info on how to clear blocks (that’s could easily be a whole separate series of how-tos!) check out my book 1-2-3 Clarity: Banish Your Blocks, Doubts, Fears, and Limiting Beliefs Like a Spiritual Badass.
Get Unstuck Tip #2 – Pattern Shatter
Another reason you may feel stuck is because you’re trapped in a pattern of habit, which is literally keeping you stuck in a rut. Fortunately, while it may take at least 21 days to begin to form a new habit, it only takes a split second decision to invoke a Pattern Shatter. Seriously, that’s it! In an instant, you can shatter a pattern by simply choosing a different action. Getting into the same discussion with a co-worker all too often? Next time the person brings it up, do the exact opposite of whatever you normally do in response. For example, if they are complaining about the temperature in the office and you usually try to abate them with reasoning about why it’s always set at 72 degrees, or something like that, what if THIS time, you pick up your phone and make a phone call. Not to anyone about the thermostat, of course, but simply to anyone else about anything at all. Or what if you just stood up and walked to the rest room for a quick potty break (or not)? Your co-worker will be forced to respond differently because you have altered the pattern. The results of this one simple task are astonishing, just try it and see what happens!
Get Unstuck Tip #3 – Get Uncomfy
There’s a reason successful people talk about getting outside your comfort zone. This once unheard-of phrase is now totally mainstream (note the lack of “quote marks” around it here). When you decide to do something uncomfortable, it forces you to think and act differently, and when you feel stuck, anything different is good–anything at all. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve got to sign up for skydiving lessons or buy a pet pig. You might try writing (or eating) with your left hand if you’re right-handed, or switching your mouse to the other side of your keyboard. Instead of going to your go-to picks on Netflix, pick out a movie WAY outside of your normal preferred genre. Love the rom-coms? Try a period piece or a spy thriller. Stuck on documentaries? Try a Will Ferrell flick and prepare to laugh your ass off. Tend to gravitate toward anything with Bradley Cooper? Well, hang on. I actually happen to agree with you there. But I think you get the idea. OK, hang on, the mention of Bradley Cooper has….whew… did it suddenly get hot in here? Where’d your co-worker wander off it, I could swear someone just jacked with the thermostat.
OK join me next time where we’ll look specifically at how to get unstuck around money. And if you haven’t already seen it (or even if you have), I highly recommend renting “Limitless.” Ay-yi-yi. SO GOOD.
